Every day at airports across the country, ground crews cross the airfield as part of their normal work.
From the driver’s seat of the truck, a taxiway can look quiet, nothing but a stretch of pavement with no aircraft in sight. On the far side is the reason the truck is out here at all: a light that needs fixing, a sign to inspect, a crew already working and waiting on the vehicle to reach them.
These are routine parts of keeping an airfield running, and they happen more often than the average person would guess.
In January 2026, the FAA logged 97 runway incursions nationwide.
Fifty-six traced back to pilots, 17 to controllers, while the other 22 were vehicle or pedestrian deviations. That’s FAA speak for a truck, a piece of equipment, or a person crossing into a protected area without the clearance to be there. That is more than a fifth of the total. Safety analysts point out this is not a trend, but it does offer a look into a share of the problem. And this share is often behind the scenes, getting lost behind headlines about pilots and control towers.
The Busiest Worksite You Never See
When people picture a close call on a runway, they picture two aircraft, or an aircraft and a tower that talked past each other. That picture is fair because pilot deviations are the largest single category most months, and they should get attention. But it does leave out the busyness of the ground itself.
A working airfield is a workplace full of fuel trucks, mowers, sweepers, inspection vehicles, construction crews, and the people who walk alongside all of it. They’re sharing space with aircraft moving faster than anything else on the property. A runway is not a road, and the margin for a wrong turn is not measured in fender benders. It is measured in the fact that a landing aircraft has nowhere else to go.
When The Margin Is Gone
This past March, an Air Canada Express jet landing at LaGuardia collided with a Port Authority fire truck that had crossed onto the runway. Both pilots were killed (CNN). The investigation is ongoing, and the early findings are complicated. The truck had clearance to cross. The controller called for it to stop in the final seconds. The vehicle carried no transponder, and the airport’s surface detection system never generated an alert.
It would be wrong to reduce that night to a single cause, and to point fingers while the NTSB is still working. However, the LaGuardia incident does demonstrate something that the statistics only imply. On the ground is where layer upon layer of protection has to hold. When they don’t,there is no altitude to recover in and no second try. Fortunately most vehicle and pedestrian deviations end with a report and no harm done. However the point of taking them seriously is that the ones that do not end quietly do not give any warning first.
People, Not Just Programs
So what closes the gap on the ground side? Technology helps. Surface detection systems, better markings, and controller memory aids are all part of the answer, and the FAA is currently investing in them. But they are only tools and a backstop for a decision a human makes on the ground. Someone still has to know the airfield, hold the clearance, watch the movement, and stop a vehicle before it becomes a statistic.
That is the piece technology does not replace. A driver new to an airfield does not know which taxiway feeds which runway, or how quickly a quiet approach end comes alive. A crew focused on the job it was called to do is not watching the sky. The margin on the ground is held by people whose entire job is to watch it, who know the movement area the way a pilot knows a checklist, and whose presence means the person behind the wheel is never guessing.
The Measure of a Good Day
This is the work Alder exists to do. On commercial airfields, certified movement area escorts and flaggers go out with the crews and the vehicles that have to be there, so that no one is left to read an airfield they do not know. The escort holds the clearance. The flagger keeps the crew where it belongs. The vehicle gets where it is going and back again, and nothing about the day makes a report.
On a good day, none of it is visible. There is no incident, no alert, no audio clip of a controller calling for a truck to stop. Just a crew that did its work and a runway that stayed a runway. That quiet is not the absence of the job. It is the job, done right. More than a fifth of one month’s incursions came from the ground. The work of keeping that number from turning into something worse looks, on its best day, like nothing happening at all.
